Performance in the New Age of Work

THE WORKFORCE IS DISSATISFIED AND DISENGAGED

quote about productivity

For the first time since 2020 global employee engagement has fallen, with middle management a key source of dissatisfaction. Our survey supported this finding, with middle managers more than three times as likely to report their productivity had fallen since the pandemic than senior management.

But employees early in their career aren’t satisfied either. They are far more likely to feel disconnected from the company’s culture, feel that their achievements are less recognized, and struggle to collaborate like their more senior peers.

"62% of senior leaders would consider new employment due to an inefficient workplace, risking significant costs to their organizations"Gallup, State of the Global Workplace 2025 Report

A SUPPORTIVE WORKPLACE ENABLES PRODUCTIVITY

Overall, employees have a positive opinion of their current workplaces with 88% reporting that their main office is at least somewhat supportive of their productivity, with most attending the office to collaborate with their team members.

Additionally, 80% of the most productive employees highlighted their workplace as a supportive element of their work. In fact, employees who say their productivity has improved since 2020 are twice as likely to say their work environment is very supportive compared to those who say their productivity has declined since then.

A key finding from the survey is that three-quarters of the least engaged employees said they would leave their company because of an inefficient workplace.

WHAT FRUSTRATES EMPLOYEES THE MOST IN THE WORKPLACE?

Difficulty completing focused work

Limited flexibility in office attendance

Time wasted finding the right people or resources

Lack of available meeting rooms/collaboration space

Difficulty accessing technology & support

Poor collaboration tools & inefficient methodologies

TECHNOLOGY IS A CATALYST OF PERFORMANCE, NOT A CURE

Workplace technology holds immense potential to enhance employee performance, but it can’t overcome poor design, disengagement, or organisational misalignment. Employees who say their productivity has improved since 2020 use AI and digital tools up to 30% more than those who say it has decreased, helping them automate repetitive tasks, streamline workflows, and create space for higher-value thinking.

RIGID POLICY IMPACTS ENGAGEMENT

Despite many organizations making strides in transforming their workplaces, the clarity and delivery of workplace policy is often overlooked.

The policies organizations put in place can have a significant impact of how employees feel and work within a workplace environment. For example, over half of the least engaged employees say their main reason for coming into the office is due to an organisational mandate, whereas 67% of the most engaged employees say their main reason is to collaborate with team members.

When office attendance is driven by policy alone, without a clear purpose or employee input, it erodes engagement.
